Zoo Crew Counselor-In-Training (CIT)

Zoo Crew Councelor In Training is a volunteer opportunity open to teens in grades 8-12. All Zoo Crew teen volunteers will learn important leadership and communication skills as a part of a passionate team. CITs assist in the ZooCamp experience, and help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for campers (ages 4-10) by encouraging participation, modeling ZooCamp expectations and assisting campers with skills during activities or crafts. Under the supervision of ZooCamp staff, CITs work as part of the ZooCamp team, and gain extensive experience in the organization of camp programs, teamwork, public speaking, and group management.

Zoo Crew Counselor-In-Training Details
Responsibilities
  • Enthusiastically greet ZooCampers and their families at the start of each day.
  • Assist campers in finding and using their cubbies, and in acclimating to the ZooCamp environment.
  • Encourage campers to participate in morning games and daily camp activities.
  • Model ZooCamp expectations for campers to encourage safe and respectful behavior.
  • Help foster a love of nature and learning in campers through maintaining an enthusiastic, positive attitude.
  • Help create and maintain a safe, welcoming, fun environment for ZooCampers, utilizing tools such as songs and group games when appropriate.
  • Facilitate a variety of Playpod activities for campers during the lunch period.
  • Assist ZooCamp staff in maintaining camper safety while out on Zoo grounds, such as during a tour on when walking to Gate 2 for check-out.
  • Remain with campers and ZooCamp staff during the day.
  • Be present for both AM and PM meetings as well as occasional team-building events on evenings or weekends.
  • Help ensure camp runs smoothly and efficiently by assisting with any related tasks, administrative or otherwise, as directed by ZooCamp counselors, junior counselors, assistant ZooCamp director or ZooCamp director.
Time Commitment
  • Must be able to commit for at least four (4) weeks of summer ZooCamp, plus one (1) week of either Winter or Spring ZooCamp as a working interview.
Qualifications
  • Must be a student in grades 7-12 at the time of application. Age verification required. Please note: Upon turning 18 years old, counselors will age out of the program.
  • Must commit to at least four full weeks of summer ZooCamp, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (5:00pm on Fridays).
  • Must commit to volunteering during either Winter Camp or Spring Camp as a working interview.
  • Must commit to two mandatory ZooCamp Counselor and CIT meetings on
  • Wednesday May 15th, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm and Sunday June 4th, 2017 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm
  • Arrive on time and stay for the entire shift.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the Zoo.
  • Enjoy working with children of all ages.
  • Interest in conservation and the natural world.
  • Ability to work well with others, as well as independently.
  • Effectively support the mission and priorities of Roger Williams Park Zoo.
  • Adhere to all policies described in the Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Volunteer Handbook.
  • Must be flexible, positive, enthusiastic, approachable, and willing to learn.
