TW: Pregnancy Loss. It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that Josephine, our 6-banded armadillo, experienced a miscarriage. Throughout her pregnancy, Josephine received regular ultrasounds and examinations, showing no signs of complications. However, over the weekend, a change in her behavior and appearance prompted our veterinary team to conduct an ultrasound that Josephine participated in voluntarily. Unfortunately, the ultrasound confirmed that a miscarriage had occurred.

“Sadly, miscarriages are a risk for all mammals, from humans to armadillos, and there is not always an explanation as to why,” said veterinarian Dr. Jessica Lovstad. After a thorough exam, Josephine’s behavior and health seem normal and she will continue to be monitored closely. We are truly mourning this loss but are hopeful for another pregnancy for Josephine in the future, which would be significant for the conservation of this species.
