Led Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, New Jersey since 2004.
PROVIDENCE, RI— The trustees of the Rhode Island Zoological Society (RIZS) announced today that they have selected Jeremy Goodman, DVM as the new executive director of the Zoo and the Society. RIZS supports and manages the Zoo, which is owned by the City of Providence. A seasoned zoo professional, Goodman has over 15 years of experience as a zoo veterinarian, assistant director, and director. He will begin his new role as of July 1.
John Palumbo, the publisher and president of Rhode Island Monthly and a Society trustee, led the executive search. “We were impressed by Jeremy’s breadth of experience and his significant accomplishments at the Turtle Back Zoo, where he transformed a struggling zoo into an AZA accredited premier attraction in the state of New Jersey,” said Palumbo.
Goodman’s experience ranges from master planning, strategic planning and all aspects of zoo management including crisis management (his efforts during Hurricane Sandy were recognized in Newsweek Magazine). Under his leadership, Turtle Back achieved increases in both revenue and attendance each year. He oversaw 23 construction projects totaling $45 million including animal exhibits, concessions, attractions and administrative projects. Palumbo also noted that Goodman’s enthusiasm for Roger Williams Park Zoo and its reputation as an outstanding mid- sized Zoo add to the excitement among the trustees, staff and volunteers in welcoming their new director to Providence.
Roger Williams Park Zoo, one of the oldest in the nation, is Rhode Island’s number one outdoor family and tourist attraction and is also a leader in conservation efforts undertaken by a zoo of its size. The Zoo has received numerous awards for environmental education, and conservation work done locally and around the world, caring for species that without human intervention would face certain extinction. Roger Williams Park Zoo is supported and managed by the Rhode Island Zoological Society and is owned by the City of Providence.
